Counsel II – Technology, Digital and Data

CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Counsel business partners, draft, review and negotiate contracts and transactions involving information technology, digital innovation, and licensing
  • Provide counseling on consumer-facing e-platforms including website and mobile application functionality, marketing and advertising, credit card and loyalty programs, accessibility and compliance
  • Advice on legal, regulatory, and policy developments relating to data stewardship including business enablement, privacy, and cybersecurity
  • Develop and implement effective strategies for maintaining compliance with data privacy and security laws and regulations
  • Support with development and management of effective intellectual property protection strategies
  • Manage litigation and claims related to intellectual property, digital, and data privacy and security
  • Proactively seek opportunities for and implement best practices and process improvements
  • Prepare reports and analyses of legal issues, and provide business-focused counseling on business matters
  • Supervise outside counsel and develop and manage effectively outside counsel budgets

THE ESSENTIALS FOR SUCCESS:

  • Qualified candidates will possess a JD and excellent academic credentials.

Additional requirements include:

  • Admitted to practice law in the state of Illinois (for remote candidates admitted to practice law in states other than Illinois will be considered)
  • 5-10+ years of relevant legal experience in a reputable law firm and/or in-house legal department (combination is preferred)

Job Skills/Competencies:

  • Substantial experience supporting all aspects of a wide variety of technology and commercial transactions including IT, technology procurement, digital and innovative agreements
  • Experience providing legal guidance and counseling on consumer-facing technologies including relating to website and app compliance, and social media
  • Working knowledge of data stewardship, including data privacy and security
  • Experience with supporting litigation and providing related legal counsel to business teams
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Requisite judgment to define, recommend, gain approval of and implement courses of action to support and enforce the Company’s rights and minimize Company’s liabilities
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize time, manage expenses and maximize productivity
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise outside counsel independently and effectively
  • Ability to build strong relationships with the legal team, business teams, and executives
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once, follow-through, and meet concurrent deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with attention to detail, manage tight deadlines, and prioritize business projects
  • A strong desire to learn and contribute as part of a growing team
  • Positive energy, enthusiasm, flexibility, confidence, and ability to work collaboratively as well as cross-functionally in a dynamic, fast-paced environment are a must

Other position requirements:

  • Digital and technology law experience with consumer-facing businesses, retail (physical and online) preferred
  • Some travel may be required
